ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Why do so many endurance athletes struggle with cramping, GI distress, dehydration, and race-day fueling?
Because they're asking the wrong question.
Instead of asking:
"What's the best gel?"
"What's the best electrolyte?"
"What's the best sports drink?"
Coach Chris Newport encourages athletes to ask:
"What does my body actually need?"
In this episode, you'll learn:
- why chasing products rarely works
- how sweat testing changes everything
- why fluid, sodium, and carb needs are unique
- how to build a fueling and hydration system
- why accountability and testing matter
- how to stop guessing and start trusting your plan

00:00:55.789 --> 00:00:58.589
Hey friends, and welcome back to the Find Your Edge podcast.
00:00:58.829 --> 00:01:07.310
It is getting warmer outside, and that means that we're going to be getting lots of new questions relating to fueling and hydration.
00:01:07.549 --> 00:01:17.390
More people are experiencing things like cramping or GI distress, or they head out to their local event and they're finding, oh no, that was terrible.
00:01:17.710 --> 00:01:22.670
I bonked or I felt terrible, and it's got to be something related to my nutrition.
00:01:22.909 --> 00:01:28.829
So I'm glad you're here because I encourage you to think a little differently.
00:01:29.150 --> 00:01:41.870
A common theme that we see is that so many people come into us and they are chasing products instead of actually building a system.
00:01:42.829 --> 00:01:49.390
So athletes think that the answer is finding the perfect gel, the perfect drink mix, the perfect electrolyte, or the supplement.
00:01:49.870 --> 00:01:53.069
So they ask questions like, what's the right gel to use?
00:01:53.229 --> 00:01:54.509
What's the best electrolyte?
00:01:54.670 --> 00:01:55.949
What's the best sports drink?
00:01:56.030 --> 00:01:57.710
But that is the wrong question.
00:01:57.949 --> 00:02:03.629
The better question to be asking is, what does my body actually need?
00:02:04.270 --> 00:02:12.590
Because the best product or products for one athlete can be the complete wrong answer for another.
00:02:12.830 --> 00:02:18.270
This is one of the reasons why we have compiled so many different products on the market.
00:02:18.430 --> 00:02:21.069
We're at well over 200 right now.
00:02:21.789 --> 00:02:38.750
And everything from gels, drink mixes, electrolyte mixes, real food products, water, individual ingredients, the whole nine yards to help people to create the system that works best for their body.
00:02:39.069 --> 00:02:42.590
That doesn't mean that one product is necessarily superior.
00:02:42.750 --> 00:02:46.669
There are better options for where some folks are at.
00:02:46.830 --> 00:02:57.789
So, for example, if someone is not a very heavy sweater, but they're very salty, they're going to have a different strategy than somebody who is a heavy sweater but is not salty.
00:02:58.030 --> 00:03:08.429
There can also be some nuances in terms of what is your ability or logistical opportunities to be able to carry certain things.
00:03:08.669 --> 00:03:19.229
So if you're cycling, say in an Iron Man, versus if you're running in a marathon where you can't carry a whole lot of things, those options are going to be different.
00:03:19.389 --> 00:03:32.189
So there are different strategies that align with what you need that are not necessarily focused on one product, but it's a system that we create together.
00:03:32.429 --> 00:03:36.829
And all of that comes by knowing your sweat profile.
00:03:36.989 --> 00:03:38.109
So that comes first.
00:03:38.269 --> 00:03:46.269
So before even choosing products, which listen, I know that you guys are out there and you're like, but I've tried this product and that product and this product and nothing works.
00:03:46.509 --> 00:03:49.310
Again, it's not that those things aren't working.
00:03:49.549 --> 00:03:55.310
We just have to put them together in the right way that suits you the best.
00:03:55.549 --> 00:04:00.989
So again, before choosing products, you need to understand how much fluid do you use?
00:04:01.150 --> 00:04:03.469
Know that this number is dynamic.
00:04:03.629 --> 00:04:07.789
It's dynamic based on how hard you're working.
00:04:07.949 --> 00:04:11.789
So the intensity and the conditions you're training in and racing in.
00:04:11.949 --> 00:04:16.350
So us here in North Carolina, although the weather is beautiful right now, you never know.
00:04:16.509 --> 00:04:18.829
Tomorrow is going to be super humid.
00:04:18.990 --> 00:04:25.709
And of course, that is gonna give you a different, a slightly different plan than when it's colder outside.
00:04:25.870 --> 00:04:30.189
So you have to know the intensity, you have to know the conditions you're training and racing with.
00:04:30.350 --> 00:04:34.910
And then you specifically have to know how much fluid that you're losing.
00:04:35.150 --> 00:04:39.949
And even more importantly, is how much sodium do you actually lose?
00:04:40.110 --> 00:04:43.470
That is one of the main electrolytes that is important for muscle function.
00:04:43.550 --> 00:04:54.030
And if you're not getting enough of that, in conjunction with having the right amount of fluid, again, this is all your sweat profile, that backs us into what you actually need.
00:04:54.189 --> 00:05:02.430
So this is why sweat testing is so important, and you can't build a hydration strategy without knowing your specific hydration needs.
00:05:02.670 --> 00:05:05.870
Otherwise, you're just guessing.
00:05:06.110 --> 00:05:11.150
I have had a few people over the years who guess and get lucky.
00:05:11.470 --> 00:05:16.670
And I can probably count on one hand the number of people, people that that actually was.
00:05:16.750 --> 00:05:18.430
It's it's pretty wild.
00:05:18.750 --> 00:05:24.510
So after you know your sweat profile, next piece is to back into your formula.
00:05:24.670 --> 00:05:28.110
So again, most athletes are starting with products.
00:05:28.670 --> 00:05:30.670
We start with actual numbers.
00:05:30.910 --> 00:05:38.910
So once we know your fluid needs, your sodium needs, and your carb needs, then we fit the products into the plan.
00:05:39.390 --> 00:05:49.069
It might be something that you buy or it might be something that you make, but totally can work based on what your goal is.
00:05:49.710 --> 00:05:51.790
But don't do it the other way around.
00:05:52.110 --> 00:05:58.350
Not finding those products first and then trying to fit them in to your fluid, sodium, and carbonates.
00:05:58.910 --> 00:06:04.030
This is that key shift that really changes everything.
00:06:04.590 --> 00:06:18.430
So the other piece that really dials this in, and this is unique to what we offer here, but maybe this is something that you could also work with another dietitian if you're not working with somebody like us.
00:06:18.670 --> 00:06:22.350
Accountability changes everything.
00:06:22.590 --> 00:06:26.189
So a lot of athletes are collecting their data and then they never do anything.
00:06:26.350 --> 00:06:28.910
It's the same reason why you're working with a coach, right?
00:06:29.069 --> 00:06:30.750
They should be analyzing your data.
00:06:30.910 --> 00:06:40.670
They should be looking at were you in the right zone, were you at the right intensity, what was your variability index, what was your normalized power, all of those different things your coach should be looking at.
00:06:40.830 --> 00:06:44.030
It's no different with us as nutrition professionals.
00:06:44.270 --> 00:06:48.189
Collect the data and then do something with it.
00:06:48.350 --> 00:06:51.230
Create the plan and then test it out.
00:06:51.470 --> 00:06:53.950
So this is really where the magic happens.
00:06:54.110 --> 00:07:02.750
When again, you collect the data, create the plan, test it in training, adjust it, get feedback.
00:07:03.310 --> 00:07:10.270
And what comes from all of that is total confidence, total trust in the plan that works best for you.
00:07:10.590 --> 00:07:16.510
Not more information, not another product that some other pro is using.
00:07:16.910 --> 00:07:20.750
This is all about implementation based on your specific needs.
00:07:20.910 --> 00:07:34.270
So if you are ready to stop guessing and start being confident in your fueling and hydration plan that works best for your body, that is why we created the fueling and hydration boot camp.
00:07:34.510 --> 00:07:37.550
Because most endurance athletes don't need more nutrition information.
00:07:37.790 --> 00:07:40.750
They need a fueling and hydration system that they trust.
00:07:41.310 --> 00:08:00.189
So this helps you stop guessing, stop chasing products, and actually build a system, trust your plan, and then show up to race day or even training, even if you don't want to raise, just show up to training and feel good, feel confident, feel like you're actually having fun.
00:08:01.150 --> 00:08:04.910
So enrollment for the fueling and hydration boot camp is now open.
00:08:05.069 --> 00:08:21.550
So if you're tired of the trial and error of the product chasing and ready to build a system that is personalized to you and your specific needs, head on over to the enduranceedge.com forward slash fueling bootcamp and join us before enrollment closes.
00:08:21.710 --> 00:08:31.950
So as a little bonus, if you've made it all the way to the end and you come register with us, I'm giving away two free one-on-one sessions.
00:08:32.029 --> 00:08:43.069
So$100 value that you get for free if you're one of the first two people to use the word podcast in the how did you hear about us when you register.
