00:00:55.789 --> 00:00:56.429
All right, y'all.
00:00:56.509 --> 00:00:58.670
Welcome back to the Find Your Edge podcast.
00:00:58.990 --> 00:01:07.310
I am super excited for our guest today from Girls on the Run of the Triangle, Celia Di Rio.
00:01:08.269 --> 00:01:09.069
Welcome to the show.
00:01:09.230 --> 00:01:15.390
I'm so excited for you to talk about Girls on the Run and get into all things girls' empowerment.
00:01:15.710 --> 00:01:18.030
Yeah, I'm so excited to be here and talk with you.
00:01:18.269 --> 00:01:18.750
Yes.
00:01:18.989 --> 00:01:23.390
So let's start off with how Girls on the Run got started.
00:01:24.109 --> 00:01:31.549
And then maybe a little bit of information specifically about Girls on the Run of the Triangle, because we are located in the Triangle area of North Carolina.
00:01:31.789 --> 00:01:33.549
So yeah, take it away.
00:01:33.710 --> 00:01:34.109
Yeah.
00:01:34.349 --> 00:01:38.829
So Girls on the Run, it was started actually in Charlotte.
00:01:38.990 --> 00:01:41.390
So same state, which is kind of cool.
00:01:41.710 --> 00:01:44.189
We are the second council to start.
00:01:44.349 --> 00:01:53.629
So it started with just a small group, you know, one coach, got a couple of girls together, started running and learning about confidence, and it kind of just grew from there.
00:01:53.710 --> 00:01:55.629
And now we're like all across the country.
00:01:55.949 --> 00:02:03.389
So we're the second council to like start, kind of branch off from that original Charlotte location.
00:02:03.710 --> 00:02:11.069
We started in 2000, so it's been 26 years of Girls on the Run of the Triangle.
00:02:11.310 --> 00:02:13.949
And we serve five different counties.
00:02:14.109 --> 00:02:18.189
So that's Durham, Wake, Orange, Chatham, and Johnston.
00:02:18.430 --> 00:02:22.669
Since 2000, we've served over 27,000 girls.
00:02:22.830 --> 00:02:23.789
So yeah.
00:02:24.109 --> 00:02:25.069
That's amazing.
00:02:25.229 --> 00:02:29.069
So how many, how many coaches are you up to now?
00:02:29.229 --> 00:02:34.590
And then did is there, does each team have like a certain number of girls on it?
00:02:34.750 --> 00:02:35.789
So tell us about that.
00:02:36.030 --> 00:02:36.509
Yeah.
00:02:37.069 --> 00:02:41.310
So we had around like 800 volunteer coaches last year.
00:02:42.030 --> 00:02:46.509
Um so each team has one or two coaches.
00:02:46.750 --> 00:02:48.030
The amount of girls can vary.
00:02:48.109 --> 00:02:52.990
Maybe it's like five, maybe it's up to like 20 or 30, um, depending on the site or the school.
00:02:53.069 --> 00:03:00.750
And our volunteer coaches, we train them, they get everything they need to be a coach.
00:03:00.909 --> 00:03:14.750
They're just like amazing volunteers from our community that whether that be a teacher or a parent or just someone who say, like, hey, I want to get involved in girls on the run, just has no like connection to it, they can come and coach with us.
00:03:14.989 --> 00:03:15.389
Yeah.
00:03:15.629 --> 00:03:16.349
So cool.
00:03:16.590 --> 00:03:22.189
And for the girls, is there any specific requirement for them to participate?
00:03:22.509 --> 00:03:22.909
Yeah.
00:03:23.069 --> 00:03:26.829
So we serve girls through third through eighth grade.
00:03:26.989 --> 00:03:32.030
We have two different programs, girls on the run, which is just elementary, third through fifth.
00:03:32.189 --> 00:03:36.349
And then we have our heart and soul program, which is middle school, so that's sixth through eighth.
00:03:36.590 --> 00:03:38.429
So anyone can join.
00:03:38.590 --> 00:03:51.069
We are have sites at like a lot of different schools, so you can join your school's Girls on the Run site, or you can come in without like a school and just like be placed somewhere and just join a team.
00:03:51.229 --> 00:03:55.469
We also have some teams that are affiliated with like local parks.
00:03:55.709 --> 00:03:58.509
So yeah, anyone is welcome to join.
00:03:58.909 --> 00:04:04.109
And are there like certain start and end dates, or is it just like jump in anytime?
00:04:04.189 --> 00:04:05.069
Like, how does that work?
00:04:05.310 --> 00:04:07.870
Yeah, so we have a fall and a spring season.
00:04:08.109 --> 00:04:10.829
We're getting ready to go into our spring season right now.
00:04:10.989 --> 00:04:16.910
Um, registration is currently open, um, and that will close on February 23rd.
00:04:17.069 --> 00:04:24.829
So it's a 10-week program, fall and spring, meet like teams meet like twice a week for like an hour, maybe an hour and a half long practice.
00:04:25.069 --> 00:04:28.269
And then at the end of the season, we have like a big 5K.
00:04:28.350 --> 00:04:35.949
And so all the girls run the 5K, and we all come together at the end, celebrate, run together, and it's a lot of fun.
00:04:36.269 --> 00:04:36.750
Yeah.
00:04:36.910 --> 00:04:52.430
Um, I have been at one of those 5K's, and it is so amazing, yeah, so inspiring, so fun, like unlike any other 5K I have ever participated in, and it and that's a lot.
00:04:52.590 --> 00:04:59.230
So I was lucky enough to run with a with a girl who was also a gymnast.
00:04:59.389 --> 00:05:07.629
And so she would run a little bit, and then she would walk a little bit, and then she would see a friend, and then she would run a little bit more, and then she would like leapfrog and cartwheel.
00:05:07.709 --> 00:05:12.270
And I was like, this is the most amazing 5k I've ever participated in.
00:05:12.350 --> 00:05:13.870
So it was it's so fun.
00:05:14.110 --> 00:05:15.390
Yeah, it's always so fun.
00:05:15.470 --> 00:05:17.150
I look forward to it so much every year.
00:05:17.230 --> 00:05:20.750
Like the energy is amazing, it's just like the best time.
00:05:20.910 --> 00:05:22.590
Yeah, it's next level.
00:05:22.750 --> 00:05:24.510
There's like glitter everywhere.
00:05:24.750 --> 00:05:25.950
I freaking love it.
00:05:26.030 --> 00:05:27.390
It's it's so fun.
00:05:27.629 --> 00:05:28.670
I so good.
00:05:28.830 --> 00:05:31.470
So girls are not just running.
00:05:31.550 --> 00:05:39.470
So, like if they're doing this hour and a half practice, like maybe there's an assumption, like, oh my gosh, you know, my kid can barely run anything.
00:05:39.629 --> 00:05:47.550
Like, what is a what is like a typical practice look like for them, both from the coach's point of view and also from the athlete's point of view?
00:05:47.870 --> 00:05:54.590
Yeah, so you don't have to have run ever before, both as a coach or as a participant.
00:05:54.750 --> 00:05:58.189
Um, we always say that we're like so much more than just running.
00:05:58.430 --> 00:06:09.870
It's really about like blending that physical activity like with like life skills, like making friends, like working through conflicts, kind of growing your confidence is what we focus on the most.
00:06:10.030 --> 00:06:20.990
And running is a great way to come together and like to complete a big goal, like running a 5K really gives you a lot of confidence, like learning how to do that.
00:06:21.150 --> 00:06:26.990
So, yeah, we're all about activating girls' limitless potential and making a place of belonging.
00:06:27.150 --> 00:06:32.110
So, like a typical practice would be we have like a curriculum.
00:06:32.270 --> 00:06:46.510
So we have little lessons each week that would be about things like friendship or conflicts or how to express yourself when you're feeling like angry or upset, like in a way that's productive and like staying true to yourself.
00:06:46.670 --> 00:06:53.150
So they'll do the lesson and then run, do some warmups together, maybe work up working up to that 5K.
00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:55.629
We had they do a practice, 5K at practice.
00:06:55.790 --> 00:06:58.910
So that's kind of what like a typical lesson looks like.
00:06:59.230 --> 00:07:02.430
And are these all like I know you mentioned a park?
00:07:02.590 --> 00:07:09.310
I know there was one at the school down the street from me, and we have like a little gravel kind of track kind of deal.
00:07:10.030 --> 00:07:16.990
Is it just all kinds of different surfaces potentially and areas that that these girls are running in?
00:07:17.310 --> 00:07:32.430
Yeah, so that'll be just each team has a place that's designated for them to run, whether that be at their school, we, you know, think ahead of time of where's the best, safest place for them to run, that be a track or a trail uh at a park.
00:07:32.590 --> 00:07:33.629
And yeah.
00:07:34.430 --> 00:07:34.990
Love it.
00:07:35.150 --> 00:07:35.870
So cool.
00:07:36.110 --> 00:07:40.430
And is it typical for athletes to return for multiple seasons?
00:07:40.670 --> 00:07:41.710
Same with coaches.
00:07:41.870 --> 00:07:43.870
Like what is what does that look like?
00:07:44.270 --> 00:07:45.230
Definitely, yeah.
00:07:45.310 --> 00:07:47.550
We have a lot of returning girls.
00:07:47.629 --> 00:07:54.910
Um, it's great because they can do it every year, especially if you start in third grade, you can just keep keep going and build those friendships.
00:07:55.069 --> 00:08:00.430
And we have some coaches who have been with us for 20 seasons, which is amazing.
00:08:00.670 --> 00:08:01.790
So yeah.
00:08:02.030 --> 00:08:04.990
Yeah, and you guys have two seasons per year, correct?
00:08:05.550 --> 00:08:06.510
Yeah, fall and spring.
00:08:06.910 --> 00:08:11.550
Registration is now, it's February, and then you have 10 weeks, right?
00:08:11.710 --> 00:08:16.990
And then you culminate in, at least for the triangle, this be amazing 5K, right?
00:08:17.150 --> 00:08:18.910
Yes, yes, so tell us about that.
00:08:19.069 --> 00:08:19.950
When when is that?
00:08:20.110 --> 00:08:22.910
We need all the details so that we can volunteer, we can participate.
00:08:22.990 --> 00:08:24.590
Like, how do people become coaches?
00:08:24.750 --> 00:08:27.230
So answer all the questions all at once, Celia.
00:08:27.390 --> 00:08:27.710
Yes.
00:08:28.430 --> 00:08:29.629
So we're really excited.
00:08:29.710 --> 00:08:31.710
The Be Amazing uh 5K.
00:08:31.950 --> 00:08:37.069
This year it's going to be RTP in Durham on May 16th.
00:08:37.309 --> 00:08:40.590
This is a race we partner with a company called Peak of Running.
00:08:40.669 --> 00:08:43.389
They put on this race and then we're the beneficiaries of it.
00:08:43.549 --> 00:08:47.149
And then we invite all of our families, girls to come.
00:08:47.230 --> 00:08:53.710
So it goes the money goes to supporting the scholarships and making sure that we can continue to run this amazing program.
00:08:53.950 --> 00:08:55.870
Anyone is welcome to join.
00:08:56.029 --> 00:09:02.590
So if you're a runner, if you're just someone from the community, maybe you've heard about girls on the run, kind of want to see what we're all about.
00:09:02.750 --> 00:09:05.789
Uh, it's a great way to like feel that energy and get like introduced to it.
00:09:05.870 --> 00:09:10.590
Or if you're a runner and you want to run competitively as well, anyone is welcome to join.
00:09:10.750 --> 00:09:12.269
Strollers, dogs are welcome.
00:09:12.429 --> 00:09:13.789
It's just like a fun day.
00:09:13.950 --> 00:09:16.269
So yeah, that'll be May 16th.
00:09:16.830 --> 00:09:18.990
And is it morning, I would assume?
00:09:19.230 --> 00:09:19.549
Yes.
00:09:19.789 --> 00:09:21.389
So the race starts at 10 a.m.
00:09:21.870 --> 00:09:22.830
Oh, lovely.
00:09:22.990 --> 00:09:26.110
I love I love a race where you don't have to wake up super early.
00:09:26.350 --> 00:09:26.669
No.
00:09:27.470 --> 00:09:29.629
No, it's a great, it's a good time.
00:09:29.789 --> 00:09:31.149
I appreciate that as well.
00:09:31.469 --> 00:09:31.709
Yeah.
00:09:31.870 --> 00:09:32.110
All right.
00:09:32.189 --> 00:09:33.629
So be amazing 5K.
00:09:33.709 --> 00:09:34.589
Anybody can participate.
00:09:34.829 --> 00:09:36.110
Yeah, anyone is welcome to join.
00:09:36.189 --> 00:09:40.990
It's just for the entire community, whether you're affiliated with Girls on the Run or not, you can join us there.
00:09:41.309 --> 00:09:42.029
Love that.
00:09:42.189 --> 00:09:42.750
So cool.
00:09:42.909 --> 00:09:43.389
I love that.
00:09:43.549 --> 00:09:48.349
And then you also mentioned beforehand and wanted to talk about your soulmates program.
00:09:48.750 --> 00:09:49.230
Yes.
00:09:49.469 --> 00:09:50.829
So tell us about that.
00:09:51.149 --> 00:09:51.309
Yeah.
00:09:51.549 --> 00:09:56.269
Soulmates is one of the programs that I head up and it's really fun.
00:09:56.589 --> 00:10:06.669
You can kind of choose any physical like activity of your choice and use that as a way to raise funds for girls on the run.
00:10:06.990 --> 00:10:16.189
So we've partnered with a couple different races in the area, and we give you free race registration to those races if you become a soulmate.
00:10:16.349 --> 00:10:28.669
So the ones that we currently have going are City of Oaks, Tobacco Road, and then we recently partnered with the Garmin Marathon, which is going to have its first race in Durham.
00:10:28.750 --> 00:10:35.629
So we're really excited about that to me, getting in on like the first race and being able to offer our soulmates a free race registration.
00:10:35.870 --> 00:10:39.549
So that's for the Garmin Marathon or half marathon.
00:10:39.870 --> 00:10:46.509
And as a soulmate, we kind of, you know, keep up with you, offer encouragement, send you fun like perks and goodies.
00:10:46.589 --> 00:10:53.069
And the Garmin race, you can be entered to win, uh raffled to win a free Garmin product.
00:10:53.149 --> 00:10:54.189
So that's kind of fun.
00:10:54.349 --> 00:10:55.789
Um perks.
00:10:55.949 --> 00:11:11.469
So yeah, our soulmates, so sometimes they're like past like coaches or alumni who are like, I want to get back to girls on the run and kind of inspire our girls, like and show them what's like possible, especially like running a marathon.
00:11:11.549 --> 00:11:14.509
That might be something that a girl goes on to do.
00:11:14.589 --> 00:11:16.029
So it's a really fun program.
00:11:16.509 --> 00:11:17.629
Yeah, so cool.
00:11:17.789 --> 00:11:18.589
I love that.
00:11:18.750 --> 00:11:21.789
Um, so how do people get involved with?
00:11:22.029 --> 00:11:24.269
Hopefully, we'll have everything like linked below.
00:11:24.349 --> 00:11:26.349
But how do people get involved with the soulmates program?
00:11:26.589 --> 00:11:28.990
How do they go get involved with be amazing?
00:11:29.230 --> 00:11:30.750
How do they become a coach?
00:11:30.909 --> 00:11:32.990
And how do they get one of their girls involved?
00:11:33.149 --> 00:11:34.909
Because we got a lot of different pieces here.
00:11:34.990 --> 00:11:37.149
So I want to make sure all of our bases are covered.
00:11:37.309 --> 00:11:37.549
Yes.
00:11:37.709 --> 00:11:40.429
So the best way to learn about any of those is just to go to our website.
00:11:40.509 --> 00:11:42.509
That's godertriangle.org.
00:11:42.669 --> 00:11:45.709
Uh, we have pages there for all of those things.
00:11:45.949 --> 00:11:51.469

00:11:56.029 --> 00:11:58.110
And also just following us on social media.
00:11:58.189 --> 00:12:03.870

00:12:03.949 --> 00:12:05.629
So it's, you know, it's fun as well.
00:12:05.709 --> 00:12:07.549
So uh definitely follow us on our Instagram.
00:12:07.629 --> 00:12:09.709
Um, that's Gotar underscore triangle.
00:12:09.789 --> 00:12:10.829
So G-O-T-R.
00:12:11.469 --> 00:12:12.509
It's our Instagram.
00:12:12.909 --> 00:12:13.149
Cool.
00:12:13.230 --> 00:12:14.429
I'll be sure to link to that.
00:12:14.589 --> 00:12:18.349
And then you guys have your fall 5K for your fall program.
00:12:18.750 --> 00:12:22.829
Our fall 5K, it's always the first Saturday in December.
00:12:23.389 --> 00:12:25.789
So that is a reindeer romp.
00:12:26.189 --> 00:12:30.589
So reindeer winter theme, a lot of fun.
00:12:31.069 --> 00:12:31.709
So cool.
00:12:31.949 --> 00:12:32.429
So cool.
00:12:32.669 --> 00:12:33.230
Awesome.
00:12:33.629 --> 00:12:35.309
Um, all right, Celia.
00:12:35.469 --> 00:12:51.309
Anything else you any stories you want to share about some of the athletes that you've or some of the coaches, like anything that really sticks out to you about some of your experiences you've had with the program and how it's supported these girls.
00:12:51.629 --> 00:13:00.029
Yeah, I think what sticks out to me is I always go around and chat with the girls like on race day and like interview them and ask, what do you love about girls on the run?
00:13:00.269 --> 00:13:01.870
Like, what's something that you learned this season?
00:13:01.949 --> 00:13:09.389
And I'm always like amazed at their answers, talking about like I learned how to solve conflicts, like in school.
00:13:09.469 --> 00:13:13.230
Like I used to be really like anxious or like angry or bored.
00:13:13.309 --> 00:13:22.669
And now like I think back to my time at Girls on the Run and like look forward to doing it later and just like feeling good about like their day and like making new friends.
00:13:22.750 --> 00:13:26.189
And I'm always so inspired and almost feel like emotional.
00:13:26.269 --> 00:13:32.349
Like when I see them like first start the cross the start line and just and cross the finish line.
00:13:32.429 --> 00:13:43.789
I'm like, I'm gonna cry like the joy on their faces, and I can see how excited they are that they've like run a whole 5k like some of them have never run ever before.
00:13:44.189 --> 00:13:47.949
So that always like sticks out to me is very special.
00:13:48.269 --> 00:13:54.669
So it sounds like the transformation internally and socially, and then also like in the moment.
00:13:55.069 --> 00:13:56.189
Yes, yeah.
00:13:56.909 --> 00:13:57.629
So great.
00:13:57.949 --> 00:13:58.669
I love it.
00:13:58.909 --> 00:14:00.589
Awesome, Celia.
00:14:00.829 --> 00:14:07.149
Any last um uh calls to action for us to be able to uh support girls on the run?
00:14:07.549 --> 00:14:07.870
Yeah.
00:14:08.110 --> 00:14:12.750
Uh I think what I love about uh girls on the run is that there's a lot of ways to get involved.
00:14:12.990 --> 00:14:29.549
So whether that be like as a coach or just coming into our office like for one day just to help us pack bins to get ready for supplies for our teams or coming to the 5K or being a soulmate, like any way that you want to get involved, like there's probably a great option out there for you.
00:14:29.709 --> 00:14:35.469
And we just want to like welcome everyone in to like just experience a little bit of this joy that we have to offer.
00:14:35.870 --> 00:14:36.509
So good.
00:14:36.669 --> 00:14:37.389
I love it.
00:14:37.629 --> 00:14:42.349
And uh a little uh shameless plug on our end, we do a triathlon every year.
00:14:42.429 --> 00:14:44.589
It's called Humans of Steel.
00:14:44.909 --> 00:14:59.069
And this year it is August 2nd in the summer, and Girls on the Run comes out and did we do a kids' fun run and they lead the warm-up, and it is just like absolutely the most adorable thing that we've ever seen.
00:14:59.149 --> 00:15:02.269
And then Girls on the Run of the Triangle is our beneficiary.
00:15:02.829 --> 00:15:09.230
So we try every year to support an entire team, which I think is like somewhere around$3,200.
00:15:10.189 --> 00:15:23.069
So if anybody out there listening does the Humans of Steel race, then you are also supporting Girls on the Run because me, as a race director and as a business owner, I would not be where I am today without sport.
00:15:23.469 --> 00:15:32.349
And I am so tickled by this organization at how much you support women not only in their physical activity, but their emotional and social wellness.
00:15:32.589 --> 00:15:34.909
So thank you so much for that.
00:15:35.230 --> 00:15:40.750
I deeply appreciate this program and I hope everyone out there will support it in some way, shape, or form.
00:15:40.990 --> 00:15:46.269
So, Celia, thank you so much for coming on and for sharing all things girls on the run.
00:15:46.750 --> 00:15:51.549
And we look forward to supporting you this year and in many years beyond.
00:15:51.870 --> 00:15:52.589
Oh, awesome.
00:15:52.750 --> 00:15:53.309
Thank you so much.
00:15:53.389 --> 00:15:54.589
It was great talking with you.
