00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:32.799
Now let's dive head first into this episode of the Healthy Mindset AI Podcast.
00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:35.200
Here's your host, Mike Hartman.
00:00:48.479 --> 00:00:50.399
Welcome back to another episode.
00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:56.640
And today I'm going to talk about the power of relationships, and it's a tribute to Hunter.
00:00:56.719 --> 00:00:58.719
And I'll tell you who Hunter is in a minute.
00:00:58.799 --> 00:01:06.719
For those who have followed my journey, I mentioned a couple podcasts ago that I faced the biggest challenge of my life.
00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:12.879
And I had a sepsis that attacked my body, and I'm fortunate enough to uh to still be alive.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.519
And I was fortunate enough to have some amazing people in my corner beside my family and everybody else.
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:22.000
And I mentioned before I talked about this Dr.
00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:24.239
T, who was just an incredible person.
00:01:24.400 --> 00:01:27.920
He came up and even talked to me about the Olympics that was going on.
00:01:28.079 --> 00:01:28.400
Dr.
00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:29.200
Michaels, Dr.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:34.560
Harley, Brian, the physician's assistant, the incredible nurses and the staff every day was great.
00:01:34.719 --> 00:01:43.359
But today I want to talk about someone else who really, really brought some amazing energy to me when I needed it most.
00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:44.560
And her name is Hunter.
00:01:44.719 --> 00:01:51.840
Hunter wasn't my surgeon, like I mentioned, but and she wasn't performing any big procedures or prescribing medications.
00:01:51.920 --> 00:01:56.879
But what she gave me is something equally important during the most difficult times.
00:01:57.120 --> 00:01:59.920
And she gave me a human connection that I needed.
00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:12.400
How it happened was one day I was walking with my walker in in the hospital, and as I'm walking, I walk by uh the desk.
00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:18.639
There's a little desk that is about 20, probably 20 yards from my room.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:26.879
And I see uh you know this lady there and she has a hurricane shirt on, so I look back, and okay, there you go, nice hurricane shirt.
00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:37.039
And then I I'm as I'm walking, I also looked at the screen, not trying to be nosy, but I couldn't help notice, and she was looking at NHL scores and looking at the hurricanes.
00:02:37.120 --> 00:02:38.800
And so, of course, I said something to her.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:40.319
I said, Oh, big hurricanes fan.
00:02:40.400 --> 00:02:42.479
She goes, Oh, the biggest fan, love it.
00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:43.919
I've been studying the game.
00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:45.280
I'm a huge fan.
00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:48.800
I go, I go to Raleigh, I have tickets, and I said, Oh, amazing.
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:51.280
I said, Well, if you ever get bored, come down and see me.
00:02:51.520 --> 00:02:53.360
So, talk about timing.
00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:59.039
Uh, she came down and I thought, you know, she came in the room and we were gonna have a quick conversation.
00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:00.479
And she goes, You mind if I come in?
00:03:00.560 --> 00:03:02.000
I said, No, no, come sit down.
00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:03.919
And we were talking about the hurricanes.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:07.759
We were talking about uh different players.
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:16.400
The coach uh mentioned to her that I knew uh Timmy Gleason in Michigan, he's the assistant coach, and I knew him as a young hockey player.
00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:21.680
Timmy used to go to our hockey school and and it was he's the assistant coach of the hurricanes.
00:03:21.840 --> 00:03:32.080
We talked about everything, I mean, from players and where they're from, and then she mentioned to me that she's gonna go to Finland to the neutral site game and just really great timing.
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:40.159
It was it was perfect conversation, reminding me of how powerful relationships can be during life's toughest moments.
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:54.960
So uh the greatest thing that she did for me was she took my mind off of things, and it was great, and the energy she brought in really took a uh for me, it was a tough moment that I was going through at that time, and it completely turned around.
00:03:55.039 --> 00:03:56.800
Like they say, timings everything.
00:03:56.960 --> 00:04:01.759
And I'm gonna talk about 10 different reasons why relationships really matter.
00:04:01.919 --> 00:04:06.800
And I've said this before, I I always taught my kids that life is built on relationships.
00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:14.639
So it when someone generally cares, she genuine, she came in, she wanted to say hello, and she knew what I was going through.
00:04:14.719 --> 00:04:17.920
And uh, it's great that you don't have to face challenges alone.
00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:18.800
And we didn't know any.
00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:24.319
I mean, we talked all but three minutes when I said, Hey, why don't you come down and we could chat?
00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:33.199
So the next thing is I learned through this that relationships reduce stress, they really do.
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:36.000
Someone's gonna say, How what do you mean, reduce stress?
00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:39.040
Well, a simple conversation can calm the mind.
00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:42.000
Like for me, I had a ton of anxiety in there.
00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.240
The most I've ever had during a difficult time.
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:51.839
Hunter comes in, we're talking about the game, we're talking about players, we're talking about different situations, and then I wanted to learn about her.
00:04:51.920 --> 00:05:01.279
She's sharing uh her life story, uh, very enthusiastic, and her voice just had the passion for for the hurricanes.
00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:02.560
I thought it was great.
00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:10.560
And you know, the other thing is number three, relationships help us stay positive because during a time when I was negative, I was thinking the worst.
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:16.240
I mentioned in the uh earlier episode that I didn't know if I was gonna wake up.
00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:18.399
I mean, I was uh I was negative.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:25.839
And I mean as a you know former athlete and somebody that teaches you have to stay, you have to be positive, you have to think positive.
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:26.560
I was negative.
00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:31.920
So she really turned a negative situation into an extremely positive one.
00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:37.040
And you know, you know, positive people help us see possibilities instead of problems.
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:43.120
So I'm looking at negative things, and and Hunter brought this, like I said, amazing energy in.
00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:46.000
And the other thing is it's about the human connection.
00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:49.439
So, number four, relationships create connections.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:52.959
We all want to feel seen or heard and understood.
00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:56.160
And you know, I was feeling sorry for myself.
00:05:56.319 --> 00:06:04.079
I I was asking the nurses questions and the doctors so many questions, and and in comes Hunter, and we're talking about something completely different.
00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:14.480
And she was um asking me questions about even what's going on with me and what do I think, and she and she was extremely positive uh during that whole time.
00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:18.319
It was something very special to me that I'll never forget.
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:32.399
And we talk about relationships improving your health, and there's been so much research on that that shows that a strong social connection supports better physical and emotional connections and well-being.
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:38.240
It really does because I have friends that are retired and they're retired from their jobs.
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:43.120
Uh, they worked, they worked in corporate America, and the number one thing is that human connection.
00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:44.399
You don't want to lose that.
00:06:44.480 --> 00:06:47.439
It's so important that we always keep that up.
00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:49.600
So that's that's extremely important.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:56.079
And the other thing, too, is what Hunter really did for me is relationships shift our focus.
00:06:56.240 --> 00:06:57.839
So she really shifted my focus.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:06.319
For 45 minutes, Hunter helped me focus on hockey, the good times instead of my illness, and completely took my mind away from it.
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:11.519
So when we talk about relationships, everything isn't just a transactional relationship.
00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:27.439
This was just a uh what I call is just a natural relationship and something that we both had in common, and we both love the game of hockey, and especially Hunter has so much passion for it, and and within her voice, it was it was incredible.
00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:30.560
Um, number seven, relationships build resilience.
00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:37.439
So when people support us, like Hunter did for me, we often discover this strength that we didn't even know we had.
00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:39.759
So one minute I'm laying in the bed.
00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:51.040
I remember uh Cheryl left, it was like about nine at night, and she left, and she was uh, you know, she was with me every step of the way, like I said earlier.
00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:52.639
I don't even have to go into that.
00:07:52.879 --> 00:08:00.240
And then it's not like Hunter replaced it, but she comes in the room and completely changed the momentum.
00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:15.279
It's like in a game, you know you're in a hockey game, you're watching the playoffs, all of a sudden, like in the Stanley Cup, uh, you know, the hurricanes have momentum, and then the next thing you know, uh Vegas ended up making a couple big hits, and if they score a goal, momentum shifts.
00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:20.319
So Hunter was like in hockey, she actually changed the momentum of things.
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:23.120
And uh to me that was that was great.
00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:24.399
She completely shifted it.
00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:32.159
And what I realized too was Hunter was done with work, so she had a long day and she still spent the time there to talk.
00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:33.919
So I said, Don't you have to get back?
00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:35.279
She goes, Oh no, I'm off.
00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:36.480
I go, Don't you want to get home?
00:08:36.559 --> 00:08:37.759
I think it was like a Friday night.
00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:41.039
She goes, No, I like I I enjoy talking to you.
00:08:41.120 --> 00:08:44.480
And I said, Well, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:55.919
And one thing too is we we talk about relationships creating lasting memories, and I'm I'm gonna remember this forever because um I wasn't the strongest person, I believe, mentally.
00:08:56.080 --> 00:08:58.960
I could have been probably stronger during this whole ordeal.
00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:15.039
And years from now, I may not remember every medical detail, but I remember those the the incredible uh doctors and staff and nurses, and especially even with Hunter, that how much she made it so much easier for me.
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:16.639
So that's important.
00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:20.159
So and she didn't try, and which that's the whole thing.
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:23.360
She didn't she was authentic and she was real about it.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:27.919
And relationships remind us of our humanity, you know.
00:09:28.159 --> 00:09:36.159
Behind every patient or employee, I could just say this, uh, athlete, leader, um, human being.
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:37.759
It doesn't matter.
00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:41.360
We all need that human connection, and we do need it.
00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:54.399
There's times we need it, so even in your own life, if you have to lift somebody up authentically in being real, like um like Hunter did, I mean, we need that sometimes.
00:09:54.559 --> 00:09:56.879
Sometimes people just need to talk to somebody.
00:09:56.960 --> 00:10:02.480
That's why coaches and mentors are are so important, and again, it's not all transactional.
00:10:02.639 --> 00:10:06.480
And the last one is relationships can change a life, it really can.
00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:17.440
Sometimes it's hard to just simply um sit down and listen to talk to somebody, and especially like it's Friday night and she has to go, but she took the time to sit there.
00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:23.279
So I really wanted to do this podcast, uh, a special tribute to her, Hunter.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:26.879
Uh, if you're ever gonna listen to this, thank you uh for listening.
00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:44.080
Thank you for your time, thank you for your kindness, thank you for helping me take my mind off one of the most difficult moments of my life, especially that day, because you came in at a time where I don't know if you could tell, but I was uh probably as nervous as I've ever been.
00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:55.840
Um you reminded me that healing isn't just about medicine procedures or surgeries, it's about relationships, it's about you know what happens through relationships.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:03.039
And sometimes a 45-minute conversation about hockey or about things in life could really make a difference.
00:11:03.200 --> 00:11:10.960
Uh and I just want to, you know, thank you again and how important it it it was uh for me that night.
00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:15.039
I I know you told me you enjoyed it, but I I enjoyed it even more.
00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:17.279
And uh I love your passion.
00:11:17.360 --> 00:11:18.000
And you know what?
00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:19.279
I have to admit, I was wrong.
00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:22.559
You asked me, hey, do I think the hurricanes are gonna win the Stanley Cup?
00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:23.519
And I said, I don't know.
00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:33.600
I didn't have a crystal ball, they're great team, well coached, great players, good players, uh, good fan base, loud stadium, but anything can happen.
00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:34.720
But you were right, Hunter.
00:11:34.879 --> 00:11:37.919
You told me the hurricanes are gonna win the Stanley Cup.
00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:44.639
So uh, someone who's been in hockey since they were five years old, uh my family's been in hockey.
00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:48.240
My father worked the Detroit Red Wings for I don't know how many years.
00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:52.799
My uncle took me to games since I was six years old at see the Detroit Red Wings.
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:55.360
You out hockey me, if that's a term.
00:11:55.600 --> 00:11:57.440
And uh so you did.
00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:02.159
You and I go, ah, you know, yeah, I don't know if they're gonna win, but but you were right.
00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:08.399
So, Hunter, I'm so happy that uh we got to meet, and this is just a special tribute to you.
